Music Moves for Piano

Developing the Entire Musician

Audiation, Improvisation and Keyboard Performance Skills
MUSIC MOVES FOR PIANO
Music Moves for Piano is the main curriculum our studio use and students will be supplemented with other repertoire as well. It is a comprehensive approach to learning music and the piano that develops the entire musician. It is an audiation-based, sound-before-sight approach to piano instruction by Marilyn Lowe that applies Edwin E. Gordon's Music Learning Theory in how we learn music. (Read more on the Music Learning Theory HERE.) Other influences in this approach includes the techniques and theories of Zoltan Kodaly, Carl Orff, Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, Rudolf Laban, Shinichi Suzuki and Carl Seashore.

Music Moves for Piano begins with Keyboard Games A & B, then moves through Books 1-5.
Come sing, chant, move and play the piano with us!

Music Moves for Piano - Keyboard Games A & B
In Keyboard Games, students are building a strong foundation through:
  • listening, moving, singing and rhythm chanting
  • being guided to recognize tonal & rhythm patterns to develop their music vocabulary
  • learning, exploring, creating and improvising short patterned piano pieces
  • developing effective use of the body and technique in playing
  • performing solos, duets and ensembles on the piano

Students who begin piano with Keyboard Games become independent musicians with a strong foundation for developing music literacy. The audiation and keyboard skills students will learn in this beginning series is crucial for the next stage of instruction in Levels 1-5.

The process of music learning:
Learning music is like learning a language. Think back to when you first learned your mother tongue. You start by listening to other people around you speak. Then you began to think, imitate others and speak your own words and sentences before you moved on to reading and writing. It is the same process with music. We will be listening first, then audiating and performing/improvising before we move on to reading and writing music. Notation is strategically introduced later so that the skill of audiation can be fully developed and complete music literacy can be achieved.

Through most traditional methods, you learn to play pieces and perform. But just like language, you want to be able to think and have conversations with other people rather than only being able to copy words spoken by others. This process of music learning takes time but is a valuable investment in the long run to be able to enjoy and make music for life.
